CHAPTER 41
âBLOODY HELL, NATE. Are you sure youâve got enough wood?â Jessie said as she inspected the back of his truck.
âYou may jest, but wait until I tell you what I have in mind.â He turned her to face the cottage. âPicture thisâ¦â
Jessie snorted as Nate spread his legs and framed the cottage with his hands. She bit down on her lip as he looked at her.
âAre you taking this seriously, Ms Ellis?â
âSorry. Do continue, Mr Parker.â
Nate nodded and started again. âPicture this.â He paused, but Jessie resisted the urge to make fun, instead stepping forward and focusing on the cottage, her mind constructing images as Nate spoke.
âI think we put a row of posts along the length of the cottage. Weâll fix them into the overhang of your bedroom, where Iâm pretty sure Iâll find where a similar structure used to be. Then what I propose is laying reclaimed oak boards to create the wooden porch look youâve mentioned. Last but not least, I suggest fitting retractable screens which wouldnât block your view, and would create the illusion of being outside in the elements, whilst actually being shielded from them. All I need to know from you is where you want the swing? What do you think?â He turned to look at her, his face questioning.
Jessie didnât acknowledge him; instead she walked from one end of the cottage to the other, looking at it from multiple angles. Finally, she put him out of his misery and grinned. âI love it!â
âThank God!â Nate exhaled in relief, and Jessie burst out laughing.
âIâm surprised you had your doubts, given what I said when you first mentioned it.â
âWell, being a woman, I wasnât sure if youâd exert your right to change your mind.â
âOuch!â Jessie said, feigning a blow to the stomach.
âWeâre even now.â Nate winked before handing her a spade and a tape measure. âRight, we best get started then, as I want to get the posts cemented into the ground today before I have to disappear, and weâve got a good few holes to dig before we can do that.â
Jessie took the spade and measure and followed him. âWhereâre you disappearing to?â
âOh, you know how I said Iâd taken your advice vis-Ã -vis working with Mac and Johnny?â
Jessie nodded.
âWell, they called the other night. Our first commission starts tomorrow, down south somewhere, Cambridge, I think.â
Jessie squealed, and, abandoning her tools, she threw her arms around his neck. âNate, thatâs fantastic! Iâm so pleased for you. How long will you be away?â
âA week to start with. Iâm doing the design, so I need to get a feel for the place and then do as much as I can while Iâm there. If I need to, Iâll finish it when I get back. I canât be away too long; Em would do her nut.â
He picked up Jessieâs tools and handed them back to her.
âOh, I almost forgot, I got something for you.â He ran to his truck, grabbing something off the front seat.
A present, already?
Excitement bubbled up inside until he showed it to her.
